Newsletter 1/12/2022

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Enrolment for junior infants 2023/2024 is now open. Please find an expression of interest form on our website www.stthomasjns.com

Colder weather- a gentle reminder to ensure that all children are well wrapped up with hats, scarves and warm winter coats. Due to increasingly colder conditions and sicknesses circulating, we want to ensure that our pupils remain warm and well. On wet mornings, please take your child's umbrella home with you as we do not have the facility to store them in the school. Dripping brollies also cause a lot of surface water on the corridors which can result in slippages. Thank you for your understanding.

MMR and 4 in 1: injections took place yesterday for some of our junior infants and will continue on Dec. 15th for the remainder of our junior infant pupils. Only pupils whom we have written consent for will receive the vaccinations.

History visit in room 15

History visitors: This week we had visits from Eddie Grahame, Maria Murphy and past staff members Fiona Dwyer and Michael Maher. They spoke about the history of Lucan and how it has changed over the years. They also told stories about their own school days and how St. Thomas' has changed and developed since its founding. Thank you to Ms. Morrison who organised the visits. The children were fascinated with all the stories and information. Thank you also to our history visitors who gave of their time so generously.

Moon and Sixpence- will visit the school on Dec. 5th to perform a puppet show for our pupils. The children missed out on this during book week due to a cancellation and therefore the visit will be most appreciated.

Art Abounds: This week we have been going Art Crazy in St. Thomas'. Some of our 2nd Classes are involved in the Blast Arts in Education programme and are working with an artist in residence. The school have received funding for this programme and our pupils are designing characters that will be painted on our hall walls to brighten the internal surroundings. Parent Angelina Baitrauis (pictured above left) also shared her talents with the pupils in room 13. She made their classroom windows festive ready. She received some help from her son Leon and friend Ala Parfeni. Thank you Angelina.

Goodbyes and Welcomes: Last week we said goodbye to our wonderful housekeeper of 21 years, Catherine Hayes. Catherine will be missed dearly by all the pupils and staff of St. Thomas'. This week we warmly welcome our new housekeeper, Airina Poskute whom I am sure will settle in very well. Welcome aboard Airina.

Parents' Association News

Christmas cake sale on Tuesday 6th of December. If every child could bring in shop bought or home-made cakes to be sold on the day, i.e. fairy cakes, rice crispy buns, gingerbread men etc. that would be most appreciated. Where possible try not to use nuts due to allergies. If children use Tupperware to bring cakes to school, please put child’s name on it so we can return the next day. We will be having a raffle on the day and tickets will be sold @ 50c a line. Most cakes will be priced between 50c to €1.00. Parents are welcome to pop in before they collect their children from school if they wish to buy any cakes or tickets and children can bring money to spend on treats throughout the school day.

Christmas Calendars- County Photos came to the school in November and took a class photo. We have used these photos to make a class calendar for every room. They are A3 in size and would be a lovely stocking filler for Grandparents etc. They will be on sale from the school Reception today Dec. 1st & Friday 2nd Dec, before both pickup times. Children can also bring the money into school and give it to the class teacher. They are priced €3.50 each or two for €6.00.

All fundraising this year is going towards the school’s new sensory room, which will benefit all the children in St Thomas’. Therefore, we welcome and appreciate your continued support.

Special visitor: Finally, we have organized a very special visitor to St. Thomas’ on Friday 16th of December and we have lovely gifts for all children.
